Lo scorso anno siamo stati a pedalare in uno degli stati europei meno noti dell’area balcanica: la Romania.

Forte di un grande turismo interno, scarsissima di un flusso internazionale, la Romania ci è sembrata la meta adatta per passare le vacanze. Abbiamo percorso questo bellissimo itinerario ad anello lungo le strade della Transilvania, attraversando strade forestali, svariati singletracks e soprattutto due tra le più belle strade d’alta quota che abbiamo mai percorso: la Transalpina e la Transfagarasan. Se la prima è la la più alta strada della Romania, la seconda sale sul podio come altitudine e bellezza dei paesaggi.

Lungo il percorso troverete di tutto: laghi, dighe gigantesche e territori di montagna davvero infiniti. Siamo partiti da Cluj con il treno per dirigerci a Teius; vera e propria partenza dell’itinerario. Da qui la nostra traccia si articola in sette giorni di pedalata dove non mancano salite importanti, ripagate da luoghi ancora poco conosciuti e caldamente consigliati da attraversare in bicicletta.

Giunti a Sibiu, la città degli occhi, per via dei curiosi lucernari che spuntano dai tetti delle case storiche, abbiamo deciso di evitarci 80 e passa chilometri di piattone e siamo ritornati a Cluj per fare un day-off di tutto rispetto.

Bici consigliata
Il mezzo ideale è una gravel con copertoni da 40/45 mm tassellati. I tratti sterrati sono delle piste forestali dal fondo battuto, mentre pochi sono i punti che meritano più attenzione.
Chi scrive ha percorso il tracciato con una vecchia mountain-bike da 26 pollici e copertoni da 2.25″ perché mi sono invasato con questo tipo di mezzi e ho voluto allestirmi una bici esclusivamente per i viaggi. Ho scritto un articolo dedicato su bikepacking.com

Note
Acqua: L’acqua non è un grosso problema, ne trovate a sufficienza lungo le tappe anche se vi consigliamo di partire con una scorta di almeno due litri e mezzo per ogni giornata, se decidete di partire nei periodi estivi.

Dormire: Abbiamo preferito dormire in strutture anziché fare free camping. I prezzi sono decisamente bassi rispetto alla media europea e si trovano moltissime “cabane” lungo il percorso. Soprattutto: siamo in ferie.

Orsi: Sulla Transfagarasan è molto facile incontrare gli orsi a bordo strada. Siate prudenti: essendo abituati ai turisti che gli danno da mangiare, gli orsi non ci sono sembrati così pericolosi, ma sono comunque delle bestie da cui stare alla larga. Aspettate una macchina che vi faccia da barriera nel caso ne avvistiate uno sul percorso. Sempre sulla Transfagarasan esiste una pista forestale alternativa al tracciato asfaltato. Sebbene alcuni viaggiatori in bici l’abbiano attraversata senza problemi, le persone del luogo ci hanno caldamente sconsigliato di percorrerla proprio per via di pericolo orsi sul sentiero.
