Ben prima della costruzione della strada Porrettana, ben prima della sua capostipite Leopoldina, i territori montani avevano una rete viaria piuttosto diversa. Esisteva infatti un complesso sistema di vie e sentieri severamente controllati dalle dogane che regolavano gli accessi tra il Granducato di Toscana e lo Stato Pontificio. Siamo in una zona che sembra poco battuta e considerata dagli escursionisti, ma che sa regalare notevoli panorami su entrambe le vallate, dal gruppo del Corno alle Scale ai monti delle tre Limentre.
Il tratto che qui troviamo viene chiamato oggi Strada della Faggeta, per via dei bellissimi esemplari di faggio che accompagnano il percorso lungo tutta la dorsale. Nel sistema della sentieristica CAI, corrisponde oggi ai sentieri 161 e 163.
